STP for Airports & Aviation Facilities

Sewage treatment plants for airports — managing multi-stream aviation wastewater including terminal kitchens, maintenance areas, and hotel operations with MBBR/MBR systems

Industry Overview

STP for Airports & Aviation Facilities

Airports are complex, multi-use facilities generating wastewater from passenger terminals, airline catering units, aircraft maintenance hangars, airport hotels, and staff facilities — each with distinct wastewater characteristics. A 5 MPPA airport generates 1,000–2,000 KLD of combined wastewater, with peaks driven by flight schedules that produce 6–8 hour surges well above daily average flow. Under MoEFCC environmental clearance conditions and AAI guidelines, STPs are mandatory for airports of all categories, and CPCB Consent to Operate must be maintained to avoid closure notices. India's airport expansion programme — both greenfield and brownfield development — makes compliant airport STP design an active infrastructure priority. Learn more about our sewage treatment plant capabilities.

The primary challenge in airport STP design is stream management. Terminal kitchens and airline catering units produce high-FOG wastewater requiring grease interceptors before biological treatment. Aircraft maintenance facilities generate oily wastewater that requires an API or CPI oil-water separator before entering the biological stage. These pre-treated streams combine with regular domestic sewage in the equalisation tank before MBBR or MBR biological treatment. MBR is increasingly preferred for airports where treated water must meet Class B reuse quality for runway washdowns and toilet flushing without additional polishing steps. See our pages on DAF/dissolved air flotation and MBR technology for further detail.

Spans Envirotech designs and supplies STP systems for airports from 200 KLD to 5 MLD, with modular expansion capability as passenger volumes grow. Our airport STP designs are engineered for unattended or low-staffed operation through SCADA monitoring with mobile alerts, with treated water reuse distribution networks integrated into the STP project scope to maximise the return on investment from treated water reuse.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Multi-Stream Wastewater with Incompatible Chemistry

Terminal kitchens/catering (high FOG), aircraft maintenance (oils/hydraulic fluid), hotel operations, and passenger terminals each produce different wastewater requiring pre-treatment before biological combination.

Highly Variable Flows Driven by Flight Schedules

Airport wastewater generation peaks during morning and evening peak flight hours, producing flows 3–4× the daily average; equalisation tank design must buffer these peaks to protect the biological treatment stage.

Aircraft Maintenance Oily Wastewater

Hangar and apron areas generate oily runoff and maintenance wastewater requiring API/CPI oil-water separator pre-treatment to below 10 mg/L oil before entering biological treatment.

Regulatory Multi-Authority Compliance

Airport STPs must satisfy CPCB/SPCB, AAI/DGCA environmental conditions, and MoEFCC clearance conditions simultaneously — requiring comprehensive monitoring, record-keeping, and multi-agency reporting.

Unattended Operation Requirement

Airport operations teams are not STP operators; the STP must function reliably with minimum human intervention, requiring full automation, remote SCADA, and preventive maintenance protocols.

Our Solutions

Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Multi-Stream Pre-Treatment System

Grease interceptors for catering/kitchen streams, API/CPI separator for maintenance oily water, equalisation tank for flow buffering — each sized for the specific airport's facility mix and flight schedule.

MBBR or MBR Biological Treatment

MBBR for large airport volumes; MBR for airports requiring Class B reuse quality treated water for toilet flushing and runway washdowns without additional polishing.

Treated Water Reuse Distribution

Reuse pipeline to horticulture/landscaping points, toilet flushing manifolds, and runway/apron washdown connections — recovering 80–90% of treated water within the airport boundary.

SCADA Monitoring for Unattended Operation

PLC/SCADA-controlled STP with DO, MLSS, flow, and treated water quality measurement; automated dosing systems; SMS/email alerts for facility management staff; SPCB online reporting integration.

Modular Expansion Capacity

MBBR or MBR systems designed with future expansion provisions to accommodate airport passenger growth without full system replacement.
