ETP Manufacturer & Supplier — Mangalore

KSPCB-compliant ETP systems for Mangalore's oil refining, fertiliser, chemical, cashew processing, and seafood processing industries — Baikampady industrial area, Netravati estuary, and Arabian Sea coastal discharge compliance

Industry Overview

ETP Manufacturer & Supplier — Mangalore

Mangalore's industrial base is defined by port-proximate heavy industry. MRPL — Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd — is a 15 MMTPA refinery that is one of India's most modern public sector refineries. MCF — Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilisers — operates a large fertiliser manufacturing plant adjacent to the port. The Baikampady industrial area houses chemical manufacturers, cashew processors, food industry, and light manufacturing. On the food and fishery side, Mangalore is India's major cashew export centre — the city processes a significant portion of India's raw cashew crop — and a major fish and seafood export port. All of this happens at the confluence of the Netravati and Gurupur rivers with the Arabian Sea, in an ecologically sensitive estuary supporting active fishing communities.

KSPCB Mangalore regional office specifically monitors marine discharge quality — not just standard inland discharge standards. Any industrial effluent reaching the Netravati or Gurupur estuaries or the Arabian Sea coastline is subject to KSPCB's coastal discharge standards and CRZ enforcement. Fishing community complaints reach KSPCB quickly and result in inspection. MRPL and MCF have their own large integrated ETP systems with KSPCB continuous monitoring requirements. For the Baikampady industrial area, a CETP is available but individual units still must meet CETP inlet quality norms. Cashew processing and seafood units are Red or Orange category requiring individual ETPs. KSPCB Mangalore has issued closure notices to cashew and seafood units for inadequate pre-treatment.

Spans Envirotech designs ETP systems for Mangalore's chemical manufacturing, cashew processing, seafood processing, and port-based industrial clients. Our petrochemical-adjacent ETP experience covers API separators, phenol and hydrocarbons biological treatment, and activated carbon polishing for refinery-type effluent. For cashew processing, we design high-phenol pre-treatment with MBBR biological polishing meeting KSPCB's cashew industry standards. For seafood processing, we design DAF-based systems with odour management for coastal community compliance. We provide KSPCB CTE and CTO documentation throughout.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Coastal Discharge — CRZ and Marine Standards

KSPCB Mangalore enforces marine discharge quality standards for the Arabian Sea coast and estuary. CRZ notifications create restricted zones where industrial discharge requires stricter treatment than inland equivalent. Fishing communities at the Netravati and Gurupur estuaries are directly affected by industrial discharge quality failures — and they complain to KSPCB and media. KSPCB has faster response times to coastal discharge complaints in Mangalore than in many inland locations.

Petrochemical and Refinery ETP — API Separator and Biological Treatment

Petrochemical-adjacent industries and MRPL ancillaries generate oily wastewater, hydrocarbon-laden condensate, phenol-bearing cooling water blowdown, and desalter effluent. Standard biological treatment is insufficient without primary API oil-water separation. Phenol concentrations >200 mg/L inhibit biological systems — dilution or activated carbon pre-treatment is needed before MBBR biological treatment. KSPCB Red category consent applies with online monitoring requirements.

Fertiliser Manufacturing — High-Nitrogen and Ammonia Effluent

MCF and fertiliser manufacturing ancillaries generate high-nitrogen effluent from urea and ammonium sulphate processes, ammonia-containing process condensate, and phosphate wastewater from phosphoric acid processes. Biological nitrification-denitrification is required to remove ammonia to <50 mg/L as required by KSPCB for coastal discharge. Phosphate must be chemically precipitated before biological treatment.

Cashew Processing — High-BOD, High-Phenol Effluent

Cashew processing generates BOD 1,500–4,000 mg/L effluent with significant phenol content from cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) present in cashew shells. Phenol concentrations can reach 200–800 mg/L in cashew wash effluent — toxic to standard biological systems if not pre-diluted or pre-treated. KSPCB requires phenol removal to <1 mg/L in final discharge. Activated carbon pre-treatment or Fenton pre-oxidation is required before MBBR biological polishing.

Seafood Processing — High-BOD, Odour, Coastal Sensitivity

Seafood and fish processing plants in Mangalore generate high-BOD effluent (1,000–2,500 mg/L), high SS from fish solids, fat, and blood, and strong H2S and ammonia odour compounds. With fishing communities living adjacent to processing areas and coastal estuaries nearby, odour management and effective treatment before any discharge are non-negotiable. KSPCB inspects fish processing units on complaint and scheduled rounds.

Our Solutions

Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Petrochemical ETP — API Separator, Biological, Carbon Polishing

ETPs for MRPL ancillaries and petrochemical-adjacent industries in Mangalore — API oil-water gravity separator for free oil, chemical emulsion breaking for oily emulsions, DAF for residual oil and SS, MBBR biological treatment for organic loading, secondary clarification, activated carbon polishing for phenol and hydrocarbons. KSPCB Red category online monitoring integration. Coastal discharge compliance documentation.

Chemical ETP — Baikampady CETP Pre-Treatment

On-site pre-treatment ETPs for Baikampady chemical units contributing to the CETP — screening, equalisation, pH adjustment, physio-chemical primary treatment calibrated to current CETP inlet quality norms. For larger units requiring individual ETPs: full secondary treatment (MBBR) and KSPCB consent documentation.

Cashew Processing ETP — Phenol Pre-Treatment and MBBR

ETPs for Mangalore cashew processing units — equalisation for load buffering, Fenton pre-oxidation or activated carbon pre-treatment for phenol concentration reduction to <200 mg/L before biological treatment, MBBR biological treatment for BOD/COD and residual phenol, secondary clarification, and pH correction. Final effluent phenol <1 mg/L meeting KSPCB discharge standard. KSPCB Orange/Red category CTE/CTO documentation.

Seafood Processing ETP — DAF, MBBR, Odour Control

Complete ETPs for Mangalore seafood processors — bar screen for coarse solids, grease trap pre-treatment, equalisation, DAF for fish solids, fat, and blood removal, MBBR biological treatment for BOD/COD, secondary clarification, and UV disinfection. Odour control: enclosed DAF units with chemical scrubber or biofilter on ventilation air. KSPCB coastal discharge compliance documentation.

Nitrification-Denitrification for Fertiliser Effluent

Biological nitrification-denitrification systems for MCF ancillaries and fertiliser-adjacent units — extended aeration for nitrification (NH4+ to NO3-), anoxic zone for denitrification (NO3- to N2), secondary clarification. Chemical phosphate precipitation (lime or alum) before biological treatment. KSPCB coastal discharge nitrogen and phosphate limits compliance documentation.

Marine Discharge Monitoring — Netravati Estuary Compliance

Online discharge quality monitoring for Mangalore industrial units near the Netravati and Gurupur estuaries — pH, COD, TSS, oil sensors at ETP outlet with KSPCB-compliant data logging. Alarm systems for ETP upsets to prevent non-compliant discharge. Compliance reporting in KSPCB's Mangalore regional office format.
