Jalandhar produces over 75% of India's sports equipment — cricket bats, footballs, boxing gloves, hockey sticks, badminton rackets. This concentration of manufacturing in a single city creates a remarkably diverse set of wastewater streams: leather from cricket glove and boxing equipment manufacturing (involving chrome tanning with chromium discharge risks), natural rubber vulcanisation for balls and grips (high-COD, sulphur-compound effluent), wood processing for bat and stick manufacturing, synthetic polymer bonding for modern composite gear, and metalworking for tool manufacturing. The hand tool manufacturing cluster — Jalandhar is India's largest hand tool producer — adds metalworking fluid effluent, acid pickling, and surface treatment wastewater. Together, these industries generate a complex mix that PPCB must regulate across hundreds of relatively small manufacturing units.

The Kali Bein is Jalandhar's defining compliance pressure point, much as the Dravyavati is for Jaipur or the Ganga for Kanpur. The Kali Bein's pollution — largely from industrial discharge — triggered a major restoration movement and political commitment from the Punjab government. PPCB faces ongoing pressure to demonstrate Kali Bein water quality improvement. Industrial units in the Kali Bein drainage area face more aggressive PPCB enforcement than units elsewhere in Jalandhar. Chrome from leather goods manufacturing and acids from hand tool pickling are the primary pollutants of concern. PPCB requires chrome recovery as a mandatory CTO condition for all chrome tanning operations in Jalandhar — this is enforced, not advisory.
