ETP Manufacturer & Supplier — Kanpur
UPPCB and NGT-compliant ETP, ZLD, and chrome recovery systems for Kanpur's Jajmau tannery cluster, textile mills, and chemical manufacturers — Ganga clean-up compliance specialists
Industry Overview
ETP Manufacturer & Supplier — Kanpur
Kanpur is the single most watched ETP compliance city in North India. The Jajmau tannery cluster — over 400 tanneries on the southern bank of the Ganga — has been specifically named in NGT and Supreme Court orders on Ganga clean-up. The Kanpur stretch of the Ganga receives chromium-laden effluent, high-TDS leather processing wastewater, and textile mill discharge that CPCB classifies as severely polluted. This is not a market where ETP compliance is optional or periodic — it is court-monitored and continuous. The NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga) tracks Jajmau compliance as a flagship intervention. UPPCB Kanpur division submits regular compliance reports to NGT. Non-compliant units get sealed, and the sealing notices make news.
UPPCB's enforcement posture in Kanpur has hardened since 2017. The practical requirements for Jajmau tanneries: chrome recovery is mandatory for all chrome tanning units; pre-treatment before CETP contribution is required; and larger units face individual ZLD conditions. The Jajmau CETP exists but its outlet is under UPPCB surprise inspection. Units that pass CETP contribution requirements are still liable for individual consent violations. Textile mills and chemical manufacturers in Kanpur face their own set of enforcement conditions — Kanpur's textile sector is smaller than in the 1980s but still active. Chemical manufacturers in UPSIDC industrial areas require Orange/Red category ETPs with UPPCB online monitoring at outlet.
Spans Envirotech designs and commissions ETPs for Kanpur's tanneries, leather goods manufacturers, textile mills, and chemical manufacturers. Our tannery ETP designs include chrome recovery systems (basification, precipitation, chrome cake filtration and reuse), sulphide oxidation, biological treatment for BOD/COD, and secondary clarification. We understand CETP pre-treatment requirements for Jajmau contribution. For units with ZLD conditions, we design the full RO and MEE evaporation train on top of biological treatment.
Industry Challenges
Key Environmental Challenges
Chrome Recovery — Mandatory for All Jajmau Chrome Tannage Units
Chrome recovery is not optional in Jajmau — it is a mandatory CTO condition under UPPCB. Spent chrome tanning liquor (Cr 2,000–5,000 mg/L as Cr3+) must be recovered by basification with MgO or NaOH, precipitation of chrome hydroxide cake, and reuse in tanning. Effluent after chrome recovery still contains residual Cr that requires further treatment before CETP contribution. Failure to install chrome recovery leads to CETP inlet limit violations and direct CTO cancellation.
Jajmau CETP Pre-Treatment Requirements
The Jajmau CETP accepts pre-treated tannery effluent but imposes strict inlet quality standards — sulphide <2 mg/L, chromium <2 mg/L (total), BOD below inlet limits. Individual tanneries must install primary and secondary pre-treatment before contributing. UPPCB surprise inspections at the CETP outlet mean that CETP inlet exceedances are traced back to contributing units. The CETP operator can and does disconnect non-compliant contributors.
Tannery ZLD — Larger Units
Larger Jajmau tanneries face individual ZLD conditions in their UPPCB consent. Tannery ZLD is technically demanding — tannery effluent has very high TDS (10,000–30,000 mg/L after primary treatment), high sulphide, and scaling-prone chemistry that challenges RO membranes. MEE or MVR evaporation must handle difficult concentrates. Operating ZLD in a tannery requires competent on-site operation. Under-designed or poorly commissioned ZLD systems fail rapidly in this application.
Textile Mills — Cotton and Chemical Discharge
Kanpur's cotton textile mills generate high-BOD sizing and scouring effluent, desizing effluent with starch and PVA loading, and dyeing effluent with colour. UPPCB Orange/Red category compliance requires biological treatment achieving COD <250 mg/L and BOD <30 mg/L. Many older Kanpur mills have legacy ETPs that cannot meet current UPPCB standards without upgrade or replacement.
Chemical Manufacturing — High COD and Toxic Organics
Chemical manufacturers in Kanpur's industrial areas generate high-COD effluent with toxic organics, solvents, and complex chemistry that challenges standard biological treatment. Physio-chemical pre-treatment and anaerobic treatment (UASB) are often required before aerobic biological polishing. UPPCB Red category conditions apply with online monitoring mandates.
Our Solutions
Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions
Chrome Recovery System for Tanneries
Complete chrome recovery systems for Jajmau tanneries — chrome liquor segregation and collection, basification with MgO or NaOH to pH 8–8.5, chromium hydroxide precipitation, clarification, filter press for chrome cake recovery and reuse in tanning process. Post-recovery effluent with residual Cr <2 mg/L processed through ETP for CETP contribution. UPPCB CTO documentation for chrome recovery compliance.
Tannery ETP — Pre-Treatment for CETP Contribution
Individual tannery ETPs designed to meet Jajmau CETP inlet quality norms. Treatment train: chrome recovery (segregated streams), sulphide oxidation (aeration), screening, equalisation, primary clarification, biological secondary treatment (MBBR), secondary clarification, pH correction. Systems sized to UPPCB individual consent conditions and CETP inlet specifications.
Tannery ZLD — RO and MEE for Larger Units
ZLD systems for larger Jajmau tanneries — ETP secondary treatment followed by multimedia filtration, anti-scalant dosing, RO for TDS reduction and water recovery, and MEE (Multi-Effect Evaporation) for RO reject concentration. MEE designed for high-TDS, high-scaling tannery chemistry. Crystalliser or solar evaporation for final solid disposal. Online monitoring for UPPCB ZLD verification.
Textile Mill ETP
ETPs for Kanpur's cotton textile mills — desizing effluent treatment (amylase enzyme for starch, then biological treatment), scouring effluent treatment (DAF for sizing residuals), dyeing effluent colour removal (coagulation/flocculation), MBBR biological treatment, secondary clarification. Upgrade systems available for legacy ETP retrofits meeting current UPPCB standards.
Chemical Industry ETP
Multi-stage ETPs for Kanpur chemical manufacturers — physio-chemical primary treatment, UASB anaerobic reactor for high-COD streams, aerobic biological treatment (MBBR), secondary clarification, activated carbon polishing, and Fenton AOP for recalcitrant organics. UPPCB online monitoring integration at ETP outlet. Red category CTO documentation.
CETP Integration and Compliance Support
Technical support for Jajmau CETP inlet compliance — ETP audit, process troubleshooting, and upgrade design to meet tightened CETP inlet quality standards. Compliance reporting documentation for UPPCB and NGT-monitored submissions.
