Food & Beverage / FMCG Industry Solutions
Effluent treatment systems for food processing and FMCG manufacturers — handling high BOD/COD, fats and oils, TSS, and variable loads while achieving CPCB-compliant discharge and enabling water reuse
Industry Overview
Food & Beverage / FMCG Industry Solutions
The food and beverage industry is Spans Envirotech's primary industrial focus. Since 1993, we have designed and commissioned effluent treatment plants for some of India's largest FMCG and food processing companies — including Britannia Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Lotte India, KRBL Limited, and Devyani Food Industries. Our experience across biscuit and confectionery manufacturing, packaged food production, instant noodles, dairy, rice milling, and QSR commissary kitchens gives us deep familiarity with the effluent profiles, regulatory requirements, and operational realities of this sector.
Food processing wastewater is characterised by high and variable organic loads (BOD 500–8,000 mg/L, COD 800–15,000 mg/L), significant fats, oils, and greases (FOG) from cooking and cleaning operations, and suspended solids from raw material handling, washing, and product losses. pH swings from CIP chemical use, and seasonal or SKU-driven production variation add further complexity. Effluent from food manufacturing plants is classified as industrial effluent and must comply with CPCB/SPCB discharge standards; many sites also face CPCB mandates for Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD).
Spans designs integrated treatment systems that begin with physio-chemical primary treatment (screening, fat traps, DAF) to remove FOG and suspended solids before biological treatment. Secondary biological treatment — typically MBBR, MBR, or activated sludge — degrades dissolved organics. Where reuse or ZLD is required, tertiary treatment using RO membranes, evaporation systems (MEE/MVR/ATFD), and crystallisers recovers water and concentrates the reject for disposal. Our food and beverage ETPs are designed for robust, low-maintenance operation with the process reliability that large-scale manufacturing requires.
Industry Challenges
Key Environmental Challenges
High and Variable BOD/COD Loads
Food manufacturing effluent carries BOD of 500–8,000 mg/L and COD up to 15,000 mg/L — far exceeding domestic sewage. Loads vary with production schedules, product changeovers, and seasonal demand. Treatment systems must be designed for peak loads without over-sizing for average conditions.
Fats, Oils, and Greases (FOG)
Cooking, frying, and dairy processing generate high concentrations of fats, oils, and greases that clog biological systems and inhibit microbial activity if not removed upstream. DAF systems with polyelectrolyte dosing are essential for reliable FOG removal prior to biological treatment.
Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
Raw material handling, washing, peeling, and product losses contribute high TSS loads — starch, flour, pulp, protein solids. These must be removed in primary treatment to reduce biological treatment load and prevent sludge accumulation in downstream units.
CIP Chemical Impact
Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) cycles discharge acidic or caustic wash waters that create sharp pH swings. Equalisation tanks and pH correction systems are critical to protect biological treatment processes from inhibition during and after cleaning cycles.
CPCB/SPCB Compliance and ZLD Mandates
Food processing units are required to comply with CPCB/SPCB standards for effluent discharge. Many states now mandate ZLD for water-stressed areas or large-scale food processing clusters, requiring advanced tertiary treatment and near-complete water recovery.
Water Reuse and Sustainability
FMCG manufacturers face rising water costs, CSR commitments, and customer sustainability requirements. Recovering treated water for cooling towers, boiler feed, or utility washdowns reduces freshwater withdrawal and demonstrates measurable environmental performance.
Our Solutions
Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions
Complete ETP Design & Build
Integrated effluent treatment plants covering screening and grit removal, fat traps/DAF for FOG removal, biological treatment (MBBR or activated sludge), secondary clarification, tertiary filtration, and sludge dewatering. Designed to meet CPCB/SPCB discharge standards for BOD, COD, TSS, and oil & grease.
Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for FOG Removal
High-efficiency DAF systems remove fats, oils, greases, and suspended solids through pressurised micro-bubble flotation with polyelectrolyte/coagulant dosing. Essential primary treatment for food industry effluent before biological stages. Available in 5–500+ m³/hr configurations.
MBBR Biological Treatment
Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology provides compact, robust aerobic biological treatment well-suited to variable food industry loads. MBBR carriers maintain high biomass concentration without sludge recycle complexity, delivering consistent BOD and COD removal to near-discharge levels.
MBR Systems for High-Quality Reuse
Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) combines biological treatment with ultrafiltration membranes to produce permeate quality suitable for direct reuse in cooling towers, boiler makeup, or utility applications. Compact footprint suits brownfield sites; TSS in permeate typically <1 mg/L.
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Systems
End-to-end ZLD systems integrating ETP/MBR pre-treatment, Reverse Osmosis (RO), and thermal evaporation (MEE/MVR/ATFD) to recover >95% of water from effluent. Designed to meet CPCB ZLD mandates for food processing units in water-stressed zones.
Sludge Management & Dewatering
Volute screw press or belt filter press dewatering reduces biological sludge to 18–22% dry solids for cost-effective disposal or composting. Grease sludge from DAF thickeners is separately handled. Complete sludge management design included in all ETP projects.
