Acidic Pickling Rinse Water from Steel Re-Rolling

Steel re-rolling mills in Raipur use hydrochloric or sulphuric acid pickling to remove mill scale and surface oxides from steel coils before rolling. Spent pickle liquor and acid rinse water (pH 1–3, high iron, dissolved solids) require acid neutralisation with lime, iron hydroxide precipitation, and clarification before biological polishing. Spent acid recovery or disposal is a secondary challenge — ETPs must be designed for both the spent acid stream and the dilute rinse water at different concentrations.

Oily Wastewater and Mill Scale from Rolling Mills

Hot and cold rolling operations generate oily process water containing emulsified rolling oil, mill scale (iron oxide particles), and hydraulic oil leaks. High suspended solids from mill scale can clog downstream biological systems if not removed in primary treatment. DAF or CPI/TPI separators for oil-water separation, followed by scale settling and biological polishing, are required. Scale sludge has potential for recovery as iron oxide raw material.

Cooling Tower Blowdown — High TDS, Antiscalants, Biocides

Raipur's steel plants and power units rely on extensive cooling water systems. Cooling tower blowdown is a high-volume, high-TDS wastewater stream containing antiscalant chemicals, biocide residues (chlorine compounds), and dissolved salts concentrated by evaporative cooling. TDS levels of 3,000–8,000 mg/L in blowdown require ZLD treatment (RO + evaporation) or dedicated high-TDS ETPs to prevent groundwater contamination through uncontrolled discharge.

Dust Scrubber Water from DRI and Blast Furnace Gas Cleaning

DRI (sponge iron) plants and blast furnace gas cleaning systems use wet scrubbers that generate high-volume, high-suspended-solids water loaded with fine iron oxide dust and process gas impurities. These streams require primary sedimentation, coagulation-flocculation, and clarification before discharge. Sludge from scrubber water treatment — iron oxide cake — is often recyclable as iron ore feedstock.

Rice Mill and Food Processing High-BOD Effluent

Raipur's rice processing industry generates effluent with high BOD from rice starch, bran washing, and process washings. BOD levels of 800–3,000 mg/L are typical in raw rice mill effluent. Food processing units (soybean, dal, edible oil) add high-FOG streams. Biological treatment (MBBR or activated sludge) with appropriate FOG pre-removal (DAF) is required, and the effluent volumes and seasonal rice harvest cycles demand adequate equalisation capacity.

Fly Ash and Power Plant Leachate Management
