ETP, STP, DAF, MBBR, MBR, and ZLD systems for industrial and commercial clients in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and across the UAE — engineered to comply with Dubai Municipality, ADEK, and Trakhees effluent standards

Industry Overview

Industrial Wastewater Treatment — UAE

Spans Envirotech has been supplying engineered wastewater treatment systems to clients in the Middle East and UAE since the 2000s. The UAE's rapid industrial growth — particularly in food processing, FMCG manufacturing, hospitality, and pharmaceuticals — has created strong demand for reliable, compact, and high-quality effluent treatment systems that meet the stringent requirements of Dubai Municipality (DM), Abu Dhabi's Environment Agency (EAD), and free zone regulators such as Trakhees and JAFZA.

Industrial wastewater in the UAE must be treated before discharge to the municipal sewer network under UAE.S 885, which sets limits for BOD (<30 mg/L), COD (<250 mg/L), TSS (<100 mg/L), oil and grease (<10 mg/L), and pH (6–9). Surface water discharge limits under UAE.S 999 are more stringent. Free zone operating licences are typically conditional on effluent compliance, and periodic third-party effluent testing is mandatory. Non-compliant discharge can result in fines, licence suspension, and facility closure.

Our UAE project deliveries include effluent treatment plants for food processing factories, sewage treatment plants for commercial and residential developments, dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems for kitchens and food courts, and MBBR/MBR biological treatment systems for light industrial units. Packaged and containerised systems — factory-built in India and shipped CIF to UAE ports — are our most common supply mode for UAE clients, offering faster delivery, lower site construction requirements, and predictable commissioning timelines.

UAE's water scarcity context makes water reuse a significant driver alongside compliance. Treated wastewater reclaimed for irrigation, cooling tower makeup, or toilet flushing reduces operating costs and supports sustainability reporting obligations. Spans designs treatment systems with water reuse in mind — producing tertiary-quality effluent that meets Abu Dhabi Irrigation Standards (ADWEC) or Dubai Municipality recycled water quality standards.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Stringent Local Authority Standards

Dubai Municipality UAE.S 885 and Abu Dhabi EAD effluent quality conditions are stricter than Indian CPCB standards in some parameters. Systems must be engineered for consistent compliance — not just average performance — as quarterly third-party audits form the basis of licence renewal.

Space Constraints in Industrial Zones

Industrial plots in JAFZA, Dubai Industrial City, KIZAD, and Sharjah Industrial Area are typically compact. Wastewater treatment systems must be designed for minimal footprint — driving preference for MBBR over conventional activated sludge, MBR over secondary clarifiers, and packaged containerised units over traditional civil construction.

High-Temperature Operation

UAE ambient temperatures (25–48°C) significantly affect biological treatment kinetics. MBBR and MBR systems operating at elevated temperatures require careful aeration design, dissolved oxygen management, and membrane fouling control to maintain consistent performance. Sludge dewatering and drying systems must also account for high ambient temperature.

Variable Food Industry Effluent

Food processing and FMCG plants in UAE's free zones generate effluent with high and variable BOD (500–8,000 mg/L), FOG from frying and dairy operations, and pH swings from CIP chemical cleaning. Treatment systems must be designed for peak-load handling and include equalisation, DAF, biological treatment, and tertiary polishing.

Water Reuse Regulatory Requirements

Abu Dhabi's regulatory framework and Dubai's environmental policies increasingly require industrial users to demonstrate water conservation and reuse. Treated wastewater for irrigation or cooling must meet specific quality standards (Abu Dhabi Class A, B, or C recycled water) requiring tertiary treatment including UV disinfection or chlorination.

Our Solutions

Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Packaged ETP Systems — Factory-Built, CIF UAE

Containerised and skid-mounted ETPs assembled and tested in Spans' India facilities, shipped CIF to Jebel Ali, Khalifa Port, or other UAE ports. Covers 5–200 m³/day flow range. Includes primary screening, physio-chemical treatment, biological treatment (MBBR or extended aeration), clarification, and tertiary filtration. Minimises on-site civil work and commissioning risk.

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) for Food & Hospitality

High-efficiency DAF systems for FOG removal from food court drains, hotel kitchens, food processing effluent, and catering facility wastewater. Polyelectrolyte/coagulant dosing removes fats, oils, greases, and suspended solids before sewer discharge or biological treatment. Available 5–500+ m³/hr. Compact design with stainless steel construction for food-grade environments.

MBBR Biological Treatment

Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) technology delivers compact, robust aerobic biological treatment for UAE industrial clients. MBBR handles variable loads and temperature fluctuations better than conventional activated sludge. High biomass concentration in a compact reactor volume makes MBBR ideal for free zone plots with space restrictions.

MBR Systems for Water Reuse

Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) produces permeate quality suitable for reuse in cooling towers, boiler makeup, toilet flushing, or landscaping — meeting Abu Dhabi and Dubai recycled water standards with UV disinfection. Compact footprint, no secondary clarifier required. TSS in permeate typically <1 mg/L, suitable for direct reuse applications.

Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) for Commercial Developments

STP systems for hotels, resorts, commercial complexes, and residential developments in UAE. Designed to produce effluent suitable for irrigation reuse or sewer discharge per Dubai Municipality guidelines. MBBR-based or SBR-based STPs designed for the populations and flows of each development, with automated operation suited to facilities management teams.

ZLD Systems for Export-Oriented Manufacturers

For UAE manufacturers with stringent licence conditions or zero-discharge requirements, Spans offers end-to-end ZLD systems integrating RO with MEE or MVR evaporation. Achieves >95% water recovery. Particularly relevant for pharmaceutical, chemical, and speciality food manufacturers operating in UAE free zones under strict environmental licence conditions.
