Industrial Wastewater Treatment — Oman

ETP and ZLD systems for Oman's industrial facilities — Sohar Industrial Port, Salalah Free Zone, Rusayl Industrial Estate, and Muscat — with systems designed for Oman's arid climate, marine discharge standards, and industrial park compliance

Industry Overview

Industrial Wastewater Treatment — Oman

Oman is investing heavily in industrial diversification as part of its Vision 2040 strategy, with significant expansion of industrial parks, free zones, and manufacturing capacity at Sohar, Salalah, Muscat, and Sur. This industrial growth is driving demand for robust industrial wastewater treatment infrastructure — both for new greenfield projects and for upgrading wastewater management at existing facilities.

Spans Envirotech supplies industrial ETP, ZLD, and STP systems to Oman and across the Gulf through our Middle East export project capability. Our Indian manufacturing base provides competitive CAPEX compared to European suppliers, while our 30+ years of engineering experience ensures system reliability and compliance with Oman's Ministry of Environment discharge standards. Equipment is designed to international standards (ISO, IEC), third-party inspected, and adapted for Oman's specific climate, utility, and regulatory requirements.

Oman's water scarcity context makes water reuse and ZLD particularly relevant. Freshwater is a scarce and expensive resource — industrial facilities face increasing pressure to recover and recycle process water rather than discharging it. ZLD systems that recover >90% of treated effluent for reuse in cooling towers, boiler feed, or utility washing are increasingly the standard for new industrial installations, and a regulatory expectation for water-intensive industries.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Extreme Heat and Arid Climate Design

Oman's summer temperatures of 35–45°C create design challenges for biological treatment: accelerated metabolic rates require careful aeration control to prevent DO depletion; higher rates of evaporative water loss from open treatment tanks; thermal stress on rubber seals, polymers, and membrane materials in RO and UF systems. Equipment specification for Omani projects requires TEFC motors rated for high ambient temperatures, UV-resistant GRP/HDPE tank materials, and oversized aeration systems with redundancy.

Marine Discharge Standards

Industries discharging to Oman's marine environment or to wadis with marine connectivity must meet strict standards: BOD <20 mg/L, COD <150 mg/L, TSS <30 mg/L, Oil and Grease <5 mg/L. These are tighter than many inland discharge standards and require high-quality secondary biological treatment with tertiary polishing (sand filtration, activated carbon) as a minimum. For coastal industries near Sohar and Muscat, salinity/chloride limits also apply.

Water Scarcity and Reuse Imperative

Oman's water stress index is among the highest in the world. Industrial facilities face both economic pressure (high freshwater costs) and regulatory pressure to maximise water reuse. ZLD and partial ZLD systems that recover 70–95% of treated effluent as reusable water are increasingly standard for new industrial installations. RO permeate quality from treated industrial effluent typically achieves conductivity <500 µS/cm — suitable for cooling tower makeup and utility washing.

Sohar Industrial Port Tenant Compliance

Industrial tenants at Sohar Industrial Port must comply with the Port Authority's environmental management system in addition to national MRMEWR regulations. The Port Authority operates a centralised industrial effluent treatment facility (IETF) and specifies pre-treatment requirements for tenants connecting to the central system. New tenants must design pre-treatment to SIPA (Sohar Industrial Port Authority) specifications — which are in some cases stricter than national discharge standards.

Corrosion in Coastal Environments

Industrial facilities near Oman's coastline — Sohar, Muscat, Salalah — experience accelerated corrosion from marine atmosphere, salt spray, and high humidity. Structural steel requires appropriate protective coating systems (epoxy-polyurethane), piping specification should favour HDPE or SS316L over carbon steel where feasible, and electrical panels and control systems require IP55/IP65 rated enclosures with pressurisation or air conditioning.

Skilled Operations Resource

Skilled wastewater treatment operators are scarce in Oman relative to petrochemical and process industry skills available locally. ETPs for Omani clients must be designed for maximum automation: SCADA-integrated control with remote monitoring capability, automatic chemical dosing systems, aeration DO control, and simple maintenance procedures with low-frequency overhaul requirements. Remote monitoring capability allows Indian-based technical support to assist Omani operators in real time.

Our Solutions

Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Food and Beverage ETP — Marine Discharge Standard

ETPs for Omani food processors (dates, fish, dairy, beverages) designed to marine discharge standards: BOD <20 mg/L, COD <150 mg/L, TSS <30 mg/L. Treatment train: screening → fat trap/DAF → equalisation → MBBR or activated sludge biological treatment → secondary clarification → tertiary sand filtration → activated carbon polishing. Sludge dewatered and removed for landfill disposal.

Industrial Park Wastewater Systems

Pre-treatment and CETP systems for Omani industrial parks and free zones — Rusayl Industrial Estate, Salalah Free Zone, Muscat Airport Free Zone. Individual tenant pre-treatment modules designed to meet park authority inlet specifications. Complete CETP design for combined industrial effluent from mixed tenants. Available as modular packaged systems for rapid installation.

ZLD for Water Recovery

End-to-end ZLD systems recovering >90% of industrial effluent as reusable water — critical for Omani water-scarce context. Integration of secondary biological treatment → UF → RO → MEE/MVR evaporation → crystalliser. RO permeate (conductivity <500 µS/cm) recycled to process or utilities. Particularly relevant for pharmaceutical, food processing, and light manufacturing clients facing high freshwater costs.

Oily Wastewater Treatment

API/CPI gravity separators and dissolved air flotation for oily wastewater from Omani industrial facilities — machine shops, workshops, vehicle maintenance, small-scale refining/petrochemical operations. Oil content reduced from 100–1,000 mg/L to <5 mg/L (marine standard) through two-stage gravity separation and DAF with polyelectrolyte dosing.

Containerised Modular Systems

Pre-fabricated skid-mounted or containerised ETP systems for 10–200 KLD capacity — designed for Omani climate (high-temperature motors, UV-stable materials, IP65 electrical), manufactured and factory-tested in India, shipped to Oman with minimal on-site installation requirement. Favoured by Omani free zone and industrial park projects with time-constrained deployment requirements.

Remote Monitoring and Support

SCADA-integrated remote monitoring system allowing Spans technical team in India to monitor Omani ETP performance in real time — process parameters, equipment status, alarm management. Remote troubleshooting and process optimisation support reduces requirement for costly site visits and provides rapid response to operational issues.
