Why Industry-Specific ETP Design Matters

Every industry generates wastewater with a distinct chemical fingerprint. Dairy effluent is high in fats, proteins, and suspended solids with BOD typically 1,000–3,000 mg/L. Pharmaceutical wastewater contains API intermediates, solvents, and recalcitrant organic compounds with BOD 400–800 mg/L but COD 1,500–4,000 mg/L. Brewery wastewater is rich in fermentable organics with BOD up to 4,000 mg/L, making it an excellent candidate for anaerobic treatment and biogas recovery.

Designing an ETP without considering industry-specific wastewater characteristics leads to either over-engineering (wasted CAPEX) or under-performance (non-compliance). Spans designs ETPs matched to actual inlet quality, seasonal variation, and plant growth plans — not generic textbook parameters.

Technology Selection by Industry

IndustryTypical BODRecommended TechnologyCAPEX / KLD
Dairy1,000–3,000 mg/LMBBR / MBR + RO₹8–18 L
Pharmaceutical400–800 mg/LMBBR + RO₹18–28 L
Food & Beverage600–1,500 mg/LMBBR + Clarifier₹8–14 L
Brewery1,500–4,000 mg/LUASB + MBBR₹10–16 L
Textile200–400 mg/LCoagulation + MBBR₹14–20 L

CAPEX per KLD is for CPCB general discharge standard. ZLD adds 2–2.5× to cost.

CPCB Compliance vs ZLD: Choosing the Right Standard

Under CPCB General Discharge standards, treated effluent must achieve BOD below 30 mg/L and COD below 250 mg/L before discharge to a water body. CPCB Land Irrigation standards are slightly relaxed (BOD ≤100 mg/L). These can typically be achieved with MBBR or MBR biological treatment alone.

Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is mandated by the National Green Tribunal for distilleries, sugar mills, textile dyeing units, and several pharma clusters. ZLD systems include RO concentration followed by Multi-Effect Evaporation (MEE) and crystallization, recovering 95–99% of water. While CAPEX is 2.5–3× higher than standard ETPs, ZLD eliminates discharge risk entirely and can achieve payback through water recovery savings in water-stressed regions.

Sludge Management: The Hidden Cost

Every biological ETP generates sludge — the concentrated biomass and settled solids from the treatment process. Sludge management is often an afterthought in ETP design but accounts for 20–35% of total operating cost. For dairy and food plants, aerobic digestion + belt press dewatering produces a manageable cake that can be composted. For pharma ETPs, centrifuge dewatering is required, and the sludge may require incineration as hazardous waste.

Brewery and distillery ETPs benefit from UASB reactors that produce minimal sludge compared to aerobic systems, while generating valuable biogas as a byproduct. Properly designed sludge dewatering can reduce disposal volumes by 80–90% and convert sludge into a saleable compost or fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ETP technology is best for a dairy plant?

For dairy plants below 500 KLD, MBBR + Clarifier is the most cost-effective option. Above 500 KLD or for reuse/ZLD targets, MBR + RO is recommended. Dairy wastewater is high in fats and BOD, so DAF pre-treatment is essential.

How much does a pharmaceutical ETP cost in India?

Pharma ETPs cost ₹18–28 lakhs per KLD for MBBR+RO, rising to ₹22–35 lakhs for ZLD compliance. A 100 KLD pharma ETP costs approximately ₹1.6–2.5 crores.

What is the best ETP for a brewery?

Brewery wastewater is ideal for UASB anaerobic treatment (biogas recovery) followed by MBBR aerobic polishing. CAPEX is ₹10–16 lakhs per KLD. The biogas generated can offset 30–50% of the ETP's electricity cost.

Does the textile industry need special ETP treatment?

Yes. Textile dyeing wastewater has high colour, TDS, and refractory COD that requires chemical coagulation for colour removal before biological treatment. A Coagulation + MBBR + ETP sequence is standard, costing ₹14–20 lakhs per KLD.
