For larger STPs (>500 KLD), we design civil-constructed systems where our engineering team provides complete drawings for local civil contractors, with Spans supplying all mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment. Process
STP Process — MBBR Technology
Inlet Screening
Bar screen or fine screen removes coarse solids, rags, and plastic from incoming raw sewage. Protects downstream equipment from damage. Screenings are collected and disposed as solid waste.
Equalisation
Equalisation tank (4–8 hours HRT) buffers flow and load variations — critical for residential STPs where sewage generation peaks in early morning and evening. Submersible mixers maintain homogeneous conditions.
MBBR Biological Treatment
MBBR reactor with polyethylene carriers (typically 55–67% fill ratio) maintains high attached-growth biomass for aerobic BOD/COD removal and nitrification. Diffused aeration provides oxygen and keeps carriers in suspension. Robust performance under variable loads typical of residential and hotel applications.
Tube/Lamella Clarifier
High-rate tube or lamella clarifier separates biological sludge from treated effluent. Compact footprint versus conventional circular clarifiers. Sludge collected and returned to aeration or pumped to sludge holding tank.
Tertiary Filtration & Disinfection
Pressure sand filter and activated carbon filter remove residual suspended solids and colour. UV disinfection (or chlorination) destroys pathogenic organisms to achieve faecal coliform ≤230 MPN/100 mL. Treated water pumped to reuse storage tank.
Sludge Dewatering
Excess biological sludge from the clarifier is pumped to a sludge holding tank and dewatered using a volute screw press or filter press to produce 18–22% dry solids cake. Dewatered sludge can be used as soil conditioner or sent to municipal composting facilities.
