Overview

About RO Membrane Elements

RO membrane elements are spiral-wound thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide devices that form the separation core of any reverse osmosis system. Feed water under pressure is forced across the semi-permeable polyamide membrane surface; water molecules pass through the membrane into a permeate carrier layer and are collected in a central permeate tube, while dissolved salts, organics, and microorganisms are rejected and exit as concentrate. Standard industrial TFC elements achieve 99.0–99.7% NaCl rejection at test conditions, making them suitable for producing high-purity process water from brackish groundwater, municipal supply, or treated effluent. For a full overview of how reverse osmosis systems are designed and applied, see the main reverse osmosis technology page at /reverse-osmosis/.

RO elements are available in two standard industrial sizes: 4040 (4-inch diameter, 40-inch length) and 8040 (8-inch diameter, 40-inch length). The 4040 size is suited to smaller systems, pilot trials, and packaged RO units up to approximately 5–10 m³/hr permeate flow. The 8040 size, with its larger active area of 37–41 m² per element, is the workhorse of large industrial RO systems from 20 m³/hr upward, reducing the number of pressure vessels required and improving system economics. Selecting the correct membrane type — standard high-rejection, low-energy, or wastewater RO grade — depends on feed water SDI, TDS, free chlorine level, and target recovery. SDI below 3 and free chlorine below 0.1 ppm are prerequisites for all polyamide TFC elements; systems on chlorinated municipal supply must include an activated carbon or sodium metabisulphite dechlorination stage upstream. Typical design flux is 15–25 LMH depending on feed quality and recovery target.

Spans Envirotech supplies RO membrane elements on a brand-neutral basis, matching performance-equivalent elements to your existing pressure vessel dimensions, system design recovery, and operating pressure. Applications served include industrial process water purification, pharmaceutical purified water systems, boiler feed water demineralisation, and treated effluent polishing for reuse. For ZLD pre-treatment brine concentration duty, high-rejection elements capable of handling elevated TDS feeds ahead of MEE or MVR evaporation are available — see the zero liquid discharge ZLD page at /zero-liquid-discharge-zld/ for system context. For pharmaceutical and healthcare ETP reuse applications, see /etp-for-pharma/. Supply is supported by full technical matching, manufacturer test data, and post-installation performance normalisation assistance.

Process

How RO Membrane Elements Work

1

Pressurised Feed Entry

Pre-treated feed water is pressurised (10–25 bar for BWRO) and enters the spiral-wound element through the feed end.

2

Membrane Separation

The semi-permeable polyamide TFC membrane allows water molecules to pass while rejecting dissolved salts, organics, and microorganisms at 99%+ efficiency.

3

Permeate Flow Through Central Tube

Purified permeate flows through the permeate carrier spacer toward the central permeate tube and exits as product water.

4

Concentrate Reject Discharge

Concentrated reject (brine) exits the element at the concentrate end and is either discharged or recycled depending on the recovery target.

5

Multi-Element Pressure Vessel

Multiple elements (typically 6–7 per pressure vessel) are connected in series to maximise system recovery while maintaining acceptable concentration polarisation.

Benefits

Key Advantages

High Salt Rejection — 99%+

Standard high-rejection TFC elements achieve 99.0–99.7% NaCl rejection, meeting the requirements of industrial process water and pharmaceutical purified water applications.

Low Energy Options

Low energy (LE) variants achieve target rejection at lower operating pressure, reducing specific energy consumption — important for large-volume industrial RO systems where power cost is significant.

Wide pH and Temperature Operating Range

pH 2–11 operating range and up to 45°C temperature tolerance suit diverse industrial process streams without special membrane grades.

Brand-Neutral Supply with Technical Matching

Spans supplies performance-equivalent elements matched to your existing housings and system design — avoiding lock-in to a single brand while ensuring correct hydraulic performance.

Datasheet-Matched Procurement

Each element batch is supplied with manufacturer test data (normalised permeate flow and rejection) verifying performance at standard test conditions, providing a baseline for operational performance tracking.

Compatible with ZLD Pre-Treatment

High-rejection elements are available for brine concentration duty ahead of MEE/MVR evaporation in ZLD systems, handling higher TDS feeds than standard BWRO grades.
