Overview

About Polyelectrolyte Dosing System

A polyelectrolyte dosing system prepares and meters a polymer solution at a precisely controlled concentration and flow rate into a sludge or wastewater stream, conditioning the suspended solids for efficient dewatering or clarification. Correct polymer conditioning is the single most important variable governing sludge dewatering performance: well-conditioned sludge produces a drier cake, clearer filtrate, and higher throughput through a screw press, filter press, or centrifuge. Poor polymer conditioning — wrong polymer type, incorrect dose, or inadequate hydration time — results in weak floc structure, blinded screens and cloths, wet cake, turbid filtrate, and ultimately higher sludge disposal costs.

A polyelectrolyte dosing system comprises a dissolution tank (HDPE or SS 316L), a variable-speed top-entry paddle agitator, a dilution water control valve with flow measurement, a metering pump (peristaltic or electromagnetic diaphragm), and an inline static mixer or agitated pipe at the injection point. In batch dissolution mode, the tank is filled with dilution water, polymer is added, and the agitator runs for a maturation period of 30–60 minutes before the prepared solution is transferred to a day tank for dosing. Continuous dilution systems feed polymer and water simultaneously into a smaller mixing chamber at a controlled ratio, providing a continuous supply without the need for a separate day tank, and are preferred for higher-flow applications where interruptions to dosing are not acceptable.

Polyelectrolyte dosing systems are installed across food and beverage, dairy, and pharmaceutical ETPs, as well as municipal sewage treatment plants — wherever sludge must be conditioned before dewatering. They are the standard upstream accessory for dissolved air flotation units (see DAF at /daf-dissolved-air-flotation/) to improve TSS and FOG removal efficiency, and are an essential part of any screw press sludge dewatering installation (see /screw-press-sludge-dewatering/). The system is equally applicable upstream of filter presses, decanter centrifuges, volute presses, and lamella clarifiers where coagulation-flocculation is required.

Process

How a Polyelectrolyte Dosing System Works

1

Polymer Preparation

Dry polymer powder or emulsion polymer is fed into the dissolution tank where it is mixed with dilution water to form a solution of the required concentration (typically 0.1–0.3% w/v).

2

Agitation & Maturation

The agitator mixes the solution at controlled speed. A maturation time of 30–60 minutes ensures complete hydration and activation of the polymer chains for maximum charge neutralisation effectiveness.

3

Dosing Pump Delivery

A peristaltic or diaphragm metering pump doses the prepared polymer solution at a controlled rate, either in proportion to incoming sludge flow (flow-proportional) or at a fixed rate.

4

Inline Mixing

Polymer solution is injected into the sludge line upstream of the dewatering equipment. An inline static mixer or agitated dilution pipe ensures rapid, thorough blending with the sludge stream.

5

Floc Formation

The polymer neutralises the negative surface charge on sludge particles, causing them to agglomerate into larger, well-structured flocs that dewater efficiently in the downstream press, centrifuge, or DAF unit.

Benefits

Key Advantages

Improved Cake Dryness

Correct polymer type and dose consistently achieves 15–30% DS in a screw press and 25–40% DS in a filter press, reducing sludge disposal volumes and costs.

Reduced Screen Blinding

Well-conditioned sludge forms strong, cohesive flocs that release water readily, reducing blinding on screw press screens, filter press cloths, and belt press fabrics.

Automated Operation

Flow-proportional dosing and auto-dilution eliminate the need for manual polymer mixing, reducing operator workload and ensuring consistent performance across varying sludge loads.

Compatible with All Polymer Forms

Systems handle dry granular polymer, liquid emulsion polymer, and solution polymer — adapting to your preferred procurement source and site constraints.

HDPE or SS Construction Options

Standard HDPE construction suits most sludge conditioning duties. SS 316L tanks and pipework are available for high-temperature or chemically aggressive polymer solutions.

Low Maintenance Design

Peristaltic dosing pumps require only periodic tube replacement. Agitator seals and bearings are accessible without major dismantling, keeping maintenance time short.
