Industry Overview

ETP Plant Manufacturer & Supplier — Ahmedabad, Gujarat

Ahmedabad is Gujarat's industrial capital and one of India's most important manufacturing centres. The city's industrial base is anchored by one of the world's largest concentrations of textile processing and dyeing units, a massive chemical and dye manufacturing cluster, significant pharmaceutical production, food processing, and the newer automotive manufacturing hub at Sanand. Gujarat as a state accounts for roughly 18–20% of India's industrial production, and Ahmedabad's GIDC clusters are at its core.

Vatva GIDC, located in south Ahmedabad, is one of Asia's largest integrated chemical industrial estates — home to hundreds of chemical, dye, and specialty chemical manufacturers including companies like Aarti Industries, Bodal Chemicals, and Meghmani Organics. The Naroda GIDC cluster concentrates textile dyeing and printing — once generating significant Kankaria lake and Sabarmati river pollution that triggered Supreme Court and NGT enforcement actions. Odhav GIDC houses diverse engineering, chemical, and FMCG manufacturers. Changodar GIDC and the Sanand growth corridor have attracted food processing, pharmaceutical, and automotive investments. Together, these clusters generate some of India's most challenging and most regulated industrial wastewater streams.

The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) has been one of India's most active state pollution regulators in pushing ZLD compliance — particularly for textile dyeing units in Naroda and chemical manufacturers in Vatva. Following National Green Tribunal orders and GPCB enforcement actions in 2015–2018, textile units in Naroda and many in Vatva are required to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge. GPCB requires online continuous monitoring (pH, TDS, COD sensors) at ETP outlet, and regular physical verification of ZLD performance. Non-compliant units face closure orders.

Spans Envirotech brings deep expertise in textile and chemical wastewater treatment — the dominant wastewater challenges in Ahmedabad's industrial clusters — alongside strong experience in food, pharma, and FMCG wastewater. Our 30+ years of EPC project delivery and our design expertise in ZLD systems for textile and chemical effluent make us a capable partner for Ahmedabad industrial clients navigating GPCB's stringent compliance requirements.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Textile ZLD — GPCB Mandate for Naroda and Vatva

Textile dyeing and printing units in Naroda and Vatva face GPCB ZLD mandates enforced since 2015–2016. Textile effluent is among the most difficult to treat — high TDS (8,000–20,000 mg/L), reactive and vat dyes, caustic soda from mercerisation, and high COD. ZLD requires colour removal, biological treatment, RO for water recovery, and MEE/MVR thermal evaporation to handle high-TDS RO reject. The total system is capital-intensive (₹6–25 crore depending on capacity) but mandatory for continued operations.

Vatva GIDC Chemical Effluent Complexity

Chemical and dye manufacturers in Vatva generate highly complex effluent — high COD (2,000–15,000 mg/L), toxic organics, heavy metals, and recalcitrant synthetic dye intermediates. Standard biological treatment is insufficient — physio-chemical primary treatment, anaerobic pre-treatment, aerobic biological treatment, and advanced oxidation (Fenton, ozone) are typically required. GPCB's online monitoring mandate means continuous compliance is required — not just periodic testing.

CETP Pre-Treatment for Small Units

Naroda (NEIL CETP) and Vatva (VIA CETP) operate Common Effluent Treatment Plants. Small contributing units must meet CETP inlet quality norms before contributing their effluent to the common network. GPCB has increasingly tightened CETP inlet standards — units that once contributed minimal pre-treatment now face secondary treatment requirements. Spans Envirotech designs on-site pre-treatment systems calibrated to current CETP inlet specifications.

Food Processing — Changodar, Bavla

Changodar GIDC and Bavla area host food and agro-processing manufacturers generating BOD/COD-rich effluent. Many food units in these areas have under-invested in ETPs historically but face increasing GPCB scrutiny. Effective food processing ETPs — DAF for FOG removal, MBBR biological treatment, sludge dewatering — are required for GPCB CTO compliance in these locations.

Automotive Effluent — Sanand

Sanand's automotive and ancillary industrial zone generates metalworking fluid emulsions, painting effluent with solvents, and electroplating/surface treatment wastewater. Automotive ETPs require oil-water separation (API separator, DAF), biological treatment for COD removal, heavy metal precipitation, and careful management of painting booth effluent. GPCB's Red category classification for automotive manufacturing means rigorous consent compliance is required.

Water Scarcity and Water Reuse Imperative

Ahmedabad faces significant water stress — the Sabarmati is heavily depleted, and groundwater in industrial areas is contaminated. GPCB and AMC (Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation) increasingly incentivise treated water reuse. ETPs designed for water reuse — MBR-based systems producing reuse-quality effluent, or ETP+RO combinations for cooling tower makeup — deliver both compliance and operational cost savings through freshwater substitution.
