Industry Overview

ETP for Marble and Granite Processing

Marble and granite processing — gang-saw cutting of stone blocks into slabs, polishing, and edge-cutting or profiling — is one of the most water-intensive operations in the stone processing industry. Continuous water flow runs through every stage of cutting and polishing, serving two functions simultaneously: cooling the blade or abrasive tooling, and suspending and carrying away the fine stone particulate generated as material is removed. This combination produces wastewater with extremely high suspended solids, commonly in the range of 5,000-20,000 mg/L TSS or higher, while carrying minimal organic content since the particulate is pure ground stone rather than any biological or chemical contaminant.

This very high TSS loading, combined with near-zero organic content, is the defining design parameter for marble and granite processing ETPs. There is no biological treatment stage in a properly designed system of this type — the waste stream is purely a physical clarification and dewatering problem, similar in principle to ceramic tile polishing wastewater but at substantially higher solids concentration. Treatment design must therefore focus entirely on settling capacity and dewatering throughput sized to the actual particulate generation rate of the cutting and polishing lines, rather than generic industrial wastewater assumptions that would badly undersize the system.

Marble and granite slurry differ in one notable chemical respect: marble slurry is alkaline, typically pH 8-10 and sometimes higher, because marble's calcium carbonate composition raises the pH of the water it is suspended in. Granite slurry, being largely silicate-based, sits much closer to neutral pH. This affects whether pH correction is needed ahead of discharge or reuse — marble processing units more often require acid dosing to bring clarified water within standard pH limits, while granite processing units typically need minimal pH adjustment.

The standard treatment approach uses gravity settling, almost always via inclined plate settlers or tube settlers rather than simple settling tanks, because these provide substantially higher settling surface area per unit footprint. Given the very high solids loading rate typical of marble and granite slurry, a conventional settling tank sized to achieve comparable clarification would require an impractically large footprint — inclined plate settlers handle the same loading within a much smaller plot area, which matters in processing units where space is constrained. Settled sludge then goes to filter press dewatering, producing a dry mineral cake.

This dewatered cake is one of the more favourable sludge outcomes in industrial wastewater treatment: rather than being pure waste requiring landfill or hazardous disposal, marble and granite dust cake commonly has secondary-use value as a raw material input for tile manufacturing, putty and filler products, or soil conditioning, depending on local off-take markets. Because the cutting and polishing process is so water-intensive, and because the clarified water carries no dissolved contaminants once the mineral solids are removed, water reuse rates of 90% or higher are both achievable and the standard expectation in well-run marble and granite processing units, with only blowdown and makeup water drawing fresh intake.

Rajasthan's Kishangarh and Udaipur regions and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are India's dominant marble and granite processing clusters, and all face significant groundwater stress. In these regions, high-rate water reuse is not a discretionary efficiency upgrade but a resource-availability necessity, reinforced by regulatory expectation. Spans Envirotech designs marble and granite processing ETPs around inclined plate settling and filter press dewatering sized to each unit's actual particulate generation rate, with clarified water recycle systems engineered to achieve the 90%+ reuse rates these water-stressed clusters require.

Industry Challenges

Key Environmental Challenges

Extremely High TSS Loading

Cutting and polishing slurry routinely carries TSS 5,000-20,000+ mg/L, among the highest solids loads found in standard industrial wastewater. Settling and dewatering capacity must be sized specifically for this loading rate, not generic TSS design assumptions.

Alkaline Marble Slurry pH

Marble's calcium carbonate composition raises slurry pH to 8-10 or higher. Discharge or reuse may require acid dosing for pH correction, a consideration less relevant to silicate-based granite slurry, which sits closer to neutral.

Footprint Constraints for High-Volume Settling

Conventional settling tanks sized for marble/granite TSS loading would require impractically large plot area. Most processing units operate on constrained sites where settling technology must deliver high clarification capacity within a small footprint.

Continuous High-Volume Water Demand

Cutting and polishing require continuous water flow for tool cooling and particulate suspension, creating sustained high freshwater demand unless clarified water is recycled at high rates back into the process.

Groundwater Stress in Processing Clusters

Rajasthan's Kishangarh and Udaipur regions and parts of Andhra Pradesh/Telangana face significant groundwater stress, making water-reuse-driven ETP design a resource-availability necessity rather than a discretionary investment.

Our Solutions

Tailored Wastewater Treatment Solutions

Inclined Plate / Tube Settlers

High-rate gravity settling using inclined plate or tube settler geometry, providing far greater settling surface area per unit footprint than conventional tanks — sized specifically for marble/granite TSS loading rates.

pH Correction for Marble Slurry

Acid dosing system to bring alkaline marble slurry water within standard pH limits before discharge or reuse, applied selectively where slurry composition requires it.

Filter Press Sludge Dewatering

Settled mineral sludge dewatered by filter press to produce a dry cake, reducing handling volume and enabling secondary-use off-take for tile manufacturing, filler products, or soil conditioning.

High-Rate Clarified Water Recycle

Clarified water recycle system routing treated water directly back to cutting and polishing lines, engineered to achieve 90%+ water reuse with only blowdown and makeup water requiring fresh intake.

Compact System Sizing for Constrained Plots

Settling and dewatering equipment selected and arranged for minimal footprint, suited to the space constraints typical of marble and granite processing units in established clusters.
